As winter settles in, transform your bedroom into a warm, inviting sanctuary. A cozy winter bedroom is better for your health, promoting relaxation, reducing stress, improving sleep quality, and enhancing your mood. Your body naturally seeks warmth and security, especially during colder weather, so creating a safe, comfortable environment makes sense!

Better Sleep
According to sleep experts, the perfect temperature for your bedroom is 65 degrees. A cooler room helps your body regulate temperature more easily, allowing for deeper and more restful sleep.
Using smart home technology to automate the temperature in your home throughout the day will guarantee a cool room and energy efficiency.
A cozy bedroom in winter can reduce stress and improve mood
Think about sound and light as part of your cozy space. Your bedroom should feel restful and decrease anxiety and tension. During the day, you want light, bright spaces, but at night your room should be dark. Consider black-out drapes for a better night’s sleep, and additional insulation.
When you need light in the evening, consider yellow, amber, and orange light to help increase melatonin production, as opposed to blue light, recommends the Sleep Foundation.
Noise can be disruptive to sleep, but sleep apps and white noise machines can help. The constant background noise that a sound machine creates can drown out loud (potentially sleep-disrupting) noises, foster relaxation, and create a sense of comfort and familiarity, according to neuropsychologist Dr. Sanam Hafeez.
Enhanced immune system
A great night’s sleep in a cozy bedroom supports your immune system according to the Sleep Foundation. Getting the right amount of high-quality sleep can strengthen your immune defense and even help with allergies.
Here are some of my favorite things for the bedroom, with some tips for making yours extra special and help you sleep.
Layer Your Bedding
Adding a mattress topper changed my life! Cooling gel memory foam – it’s the best. Add my favorite sheets – Pottery Barn’s Belgian Linen Sheets – and it’s the recipe for the perfect bed. I create my own weighted blanket feel with a lightweight woven blanket, then a duvet insert, topped with a quilt. It’s perfect for every season. Add some euro pillows to prop up while I’m reading, and some pretty pillows for daytime. And don’t forget a throw for naps!

Choose the Perfect Colors
Warm, rich colors instantly make your space feel more inviting. Consider deep neutral colors, earthy browns, and soft creams. Warm, soft colors create intimate spaces; Deeply saturated colors envelop a space; cooler colors create calm. Choose a palette and use it for your bedding, your walls, curtains, and rugs!
Here are some idea starters from Benjamin Moore:
Create a Reading Nook
If you have the space, set up a reading nook with a comfy chair and a soft throw, so you can curl up with your winter reads. The current trend of sherpa and boucle fabrics makes this a super cozy area to lose a few hours in a good book!
Bring nature in
Consider adding potted plants or evergreen branches in a vase. Many of us crave natural elements. The design movement to connect us with nature into our living spaces is called Biophilic Design. Plants not only bring us joy, but they also improve our air quality.
Personal Touches
Your personal items are what makes a house a home. I love gallery walls of family photos in the bedroom. It’s a happy way to wake up and fall asleep. The rule of thumb for a photo gallery is to choose frames of the same finish or color. They don’t have to match, but they should speak to each other in some way.
Engage your sense of smell
Scents can evoke powerful memories or help to create a sense of place. Scents like cinnamon, pine, or vanilla can evoke feelings of warmth and nostalgia, perfect for winter.
Try essential oils or scented candles to create a warm, inviting aroma. I love the range of scents by Voluspa – especially Baltic Amber – and you can use spray, candles, or diffusers to create the scent profile you love.
